Is Treadmill Running Better Than Running Outside?

Many people who decide they need to lose some weight or get into shape ask whether they should be running outside or whether they should go down to their gym and use a treadmill running machine instead. The truth is, it doesn’t really matter which method you use. There are advantages and disadvantages to both treadmill running and jogging in the fresh air outside.

Running outside lets you get into nature and you can select a different route every time, rather than plodding along the same route, which would begin to get boring very quickly. So this highlights one of the drawbacks of using a running machine, although many electric treadmills have several programs which allow you to vary the type of exercise you do. And of course, at the gym or at home, you can relieve monotony by watching the TV or listening to music.

If you run on hard surfaces outside, such as paved areas and roads, you might find that your knee or ankle joints begin to hurt after a while. While this problem can be alleviated by wearing the correct running shoes, or by running on grass instead, a treadmill will be better for you. If you already know you have problems with your knee joints, a gentle routine on the running machine will be far better as there are shock absorbers under the deck to protect you during exercise. Remember to take advice from your doctor first though if you have any pre-existing health problems or injuries.

The most important factor with any fitness program is that you give it time to work. Don’t quit too early if you are starting to become discouraged. Remember that in the early days of a new exercise program, although you may be losing lots of excess fat, you are also building new muscle mass. So your weight will not decrease as quickly as you might have expected. The last thing you should do is have an extended break from running, for example when the winter comes along. If you exclusively do outside running, the winter could easily end your exercise program. Luckily, if you have a treadmill running machine, you can get on and continue with your keep fit routine whatever the weather.
